What does a disconnect switch lockout do?

A disconnect switch is an energy isolation device intended to completely disconnect an electrical panel from the energy source. Disconnect switches are used for breaker boxes as well as other kinds of electrical panels.

If the disconnect switch is inside the breaker box, a cable device can be used to lockout the electrical panel door.

Other kinds of disconnect switches have built-in lockout devices so that the switch only requires a padlock to be locked out. A cable can be used to lockout multiple switches at once, otherwise individual padlocks can be attached to the lockout points.
