Hot Tap Work

󰅂

Hot tapping, also known as pressure tapping, is a method of connecting (either by drilling, cutting, or welding) to a pressurized system, such as a pipeline or pressure vessel, without removing the pipe or tank from service. It is commonly used to replace or add sections of pipeline without the interruption of service for air, gas, water, steam, and petrochemical distribution systems.

The lockout/tagout standard does not apply to hot-tap operations on pressurized pipelines that distribute gas, steam, water, or petroleum products, as long as the employer shows the following:

  • Continuity of service is essential;
  • Shutdown of the system is impractical;
  • Documented procedures are followed; and
  • Employees are effectively protected by special equipment.
