Step 8: Prepare for Lockout/Tagout Removal

Before locks and tags are removed, the area and equipment must be prepped for reenergization. Follow the details of the lockout/tagout procedure to ensure that:

• The equipment is operationally intact (e.g. all machine guards replaced) and all components are fully assembled.
• The equipment’s controls are in a neutral position so that it will not start unexpectedly when energy is reconnected.
• The equipment and work area are clear of all nonessential items (e.g. tools, spare parts, debris).
• All personnel are clear and accounted for, safely located away from hazardous areas.
