Step 6: Verify Isolation

Verify that the system is properly isolated and locked out before beginning any work. Verification is the step which is most frequently skipped but it is crucial to establishing a safe work environment.

Attempt to start the equipment by engaging all activating controls. Return controls to the OFF position when testing is complete. Before testing, make sure:

  • Area is clear of workers.
  • Locks are securely attached.
  • All energy sources are isolated.

Examples of Verifying Isolation:

  • Adjusting the temperature cycle thermostat to check that all electrical energies have been shut off.
  • Pushing the start function button to verify that electric power has been removed.
  • Crack the steam inlet and discharge line outlet valves.
